Craniosacral Therapy

Associated Therapists:
Nigel Mills

Craniosacral therapy was developed by an Osteopath called Sutherland over 100 years ago. In Craniosacral therapy the therapist helps the client to make very sublte yet important adjustments to the way in which they ‘hold themselves’. The client learns how to enter a deep state of relaxation and to allow areas of emotional and muscular 'holding' to soften and release. This can be an empowering experience for the client who learns that they can survive their waves of held-in emotion and do not have to remain in a tight and controlled posture.

When the client learns to fully relax there is a greater sense of 'flow' throughout the body as a whole, and a greater ability to 'let go'. When the muscles release then the bones and joints can also come into a healthier alignment. Thus people often find that the vertebrae of the spine, and even the bones of the head, resume a healthier pattern of alignment.

Craniosacral therapy is useful for releasing muscular tension. Muscular tension often plays a key role in the development and maintenance of back pain, neck pain or headaches.

Many people also seek out craniosacral therapy to help with child behaviour problems that could be related to over compression of the skull during birth. A difficult birth can result in compression of the skull, which may lead to a state of agitation in the infant and consequent difficulties in sleeping and relaxing. Craniosacral therapy aims to help the skull to resume its normal pattern of alignment, so that the pressure on the tissues of the brain is relieved.
