What Is Life Coaching?
Life coaching is a practice with the aim of helping clients to determine and achieve personal aspirations, helping them to get the most from their lives and to be the best they can be. Life coaches use a variety of techniques during the coaching process to help the client set and accomplish goals.
In general terms, life coaching can be split into two categories – business/executive coaching and personal coaching. There are many sub-sections for each category that cater for more specific goals; for example, coaching niches include interview coaching and relationship coaching to enable clients to reach their aims.
Coaching is not a form of counselling. Whereas counselling looks at a client’s history to help them overcome issues that are holding them back; coaching looks at the current situation in a client’s life, helping them to move forward by defining outcomes and working towards achieving them.
How Coaching Works
Coaching is essentially a process that is client led. The coaching relationship is one of equality – a coach is not there to teach or advise a client, but to help them by:- acting as a “sounding board” for their thoughts and ideas
- setting realistic, achievable goals and developing a framework to achieve them
- providing support and motivation as they make the journey between “old behaviours” and “new thinking”
How Long It Takes
Again, this is entirely client led. It is entirely dependent upon the size of the gap between where the client is now and where they want to be. For example, if a client wants coaching in order to prepare for an interview, it could be just one session they need. If a client wishes to improve their confidence and self esteem - it may take a little longer.
What Can Coaching Help With?
Coaching can help with a variety of issues, including:
Confidence - Self Esteem - Transition - Change - Personal Development - Goal Setting - Motivation - Direction - Purpose - Relationships - Career - Self Worth - Time Management - Health and Wellbeing
Coaching Governance And Regulation
Life Coaching is a relatively new profession and is currently self-regulated. It is acknowledged that whilst anybody can become a life coach, it is widely recommended that clients looking for a life coach should look for a coach that has undertaken training in the discipline and abides by a Code of Ethics and Conduct.
There are many governing bodies for coaching which include European Coaching Institute (ECI), International Coach Federation (ICF), Certified Coaches Federation (CCF) and Worldwide Association of Business Coaches (WABC). Although privately owned, these organisations offer their own accreditation schemes to ensure coaches registered with them have undertaken training and are committed to the development of their skills for the benefit of their clients and the profession as a whole.
An independent governance board doesn’t currently operate in the coaching sector, but there are moves to have a regulatory body in place to monitor standards for those employed in, and wishing to enter, the profession.
