“A Mechanical Solution For Mechanical Problems”
WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?
The word Chiropractic means “to perform with the hands”. Chiropractic is a primary healthcare profession that places its emphasis on the examination, diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders affecting the neuro-musculoskeletal system. This system comprises the nerves, muscles, ligaments, joints and bones of the human body and is influenced by the wide range of stresses and loads that our bodies have to deal with on a daily basis.
WHAT DO CHIROPRACTORS DO?
Doctors of Chiropractic utilise the art of functionally assessing the biomechanics of the human body to look for the root cause of mechanical disorders and pain. The treatment methods used by chiropractors include a wide range of techniques and procedures that can positively influence the functionality of the body as a whole. Chiropractors take into consideration biological, psychological and social factors that may influence care in order to obtain the best results with every patient.
HOW DO CHIROPRACTORS PERFORM TREATMENT?
Chiropractors are well known for implementing the specialised skill of joint manipulation commonly known as “Chiropractic adjustments”. This series of skilled techniques and procedures are recognised by the NHS for their therapeutic abilities and are fine tuned focused forces that are applied to specific dysfunctional joints allowing a release of tension and a regain of motion and mobility.
As well as utilising manipulative therapy to help restore the functional mechanics of the human body chiropractors are skilled in soft tissue techniques to help strengthen, lengthen, loosen and restore function into muscles and joints. They often utilise mobilisation techniques in conjunction with or in exchange of manipulative procedures and use rehabilitative therapies such as stretching and exercise to restore function, balance and co-ordination.
Although practice may vary slightly between practitioners many chiropractors choose to utilise other natural means of influencing the bodily systems including: medical acupuncture; cupping; ultrasound; interferential and nutritional therapy.
WHAT CAN CHIROPRACTORS TREAT?
New information coming soon in accordance with new ASA (Advertising Standards Agency) guidelines.
IS CHIROPRACTIC FOR ME?
Many people can benefit from Chiropractic care. Treatment is tailored around the needs of each individual patient. From everyday office workers, manual labourers, pregnant females, young children to the elderly, chiropractic has something that can benefit everyone.
Although Chiropractic is a “hands on” form of treatment only the necessary levels of contact are applied. Many forms of manipulative therapy can be performed fully clothed and the utmost levels of respect and personal space are always maintained.
As our bodies are designed for physical activity and regular movement, modern lifestyles and activities can leave us feeling stiff, tensed up and tender. These patterns often lead to muscle imbalance and dysfunction and leave us prone to injury. Chiropractic care can give your body a gentle push in the right direction and can help release tight feeling muscles and joints, to help regain the mobility and balance your body needs, in order to deal with the stresses and loads of everyday life appropriately.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT IF I DECIDE TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR?
Before administering any treatment a Chiropractic Doctor will conduct a thorough case history and physical assessment in order to fully understand you individual case and problem.
The consultation can take up to 1 hour and involves some specific questions about your past medical history, the problem/s you are currently experiencing and matters relating to your everyday activities and lifestyle.
Once enough information is obtained the Chiropractor will guide you through a Physical assessment in which they will assess your posture and physical bio-mechanics as well as perform some functional tests combining neurological, orthopaedic and chiropractic palpatory diagnostic methods.
In a small number of cases your Chiropractic may request to perform some radio graphical tests (take X-rays), refer you for MRI or ask your GP for more information or tests. This can be done privately or through your GP.
Once the assessment is complete your Chiropractor will discuss his/her findings with you and talk you through the various treatment options and advise you with his/her recommendations.
If the problem at hand is within the scope of Chiropractic care and you have discussed and agreed upon a treatment plan your Chiropractor will ask if you feel comfortable and happy to proceed with your first treatment.
Your first treatment may be administered during the first visit or booked into the next available appointment.
WHAT WILL MY TREATMENT INVOLVE?
The treatment administered will be tailored specifically to your needs and may be a combination of manipulation, mobilisation, soft tissue work, rehabilitation and all the other techniques employed by your Chiropractor.
HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?
The number for treatments required will vary depending on each individual case but for many patients 2-6 treatments is usually enough to stabilise a problem. The Chiropractor will evaluate the progress on each visit and will advise if further care is needed.
Ongoing care can also be an option in order to manage more chronic and long lasting conditions as well as for preventative reasons. In this case treatments can be less frequent but on a regular basis from once a week to once a year. This type of care can also be administered for work related problem in which stresses build up over time and the body requires a regular service. Prevention is always better than cure.
WILL I FEEL SORE?
In many instances patients feel loose, light and relaxed after a treatment but it can also leave you feeling slightly sore or “worked out” for a short period after. This will depend on the forms of treatment that you receive but in cases in which this is expected it is usually very short lived, relatively mild and will be discussed before treatment.
WHY CHOOSE CHIROPRACTIC?
The body is a complex and well designed structure but when not balanced properly it can present with a wide range of problems. These problems can present in many ways including: emotional; chemical; hormonal; psychological; spiritual; physical; social and mechanical forms.
With such a wide range of problems, medication is not always the best answer. If psychological problems receive psychotherapy, hormonal issues are dealt with hormone therapy, chemical problems are given chemical drugs, and social problems are gives social support it is only natural that a mechanical solution is required for mechanical problems.
Chiropractic is a form of mechanical therapy that has a more hands on approach than conventional forms of physical treatment such as physiotherapy, rather than relying solely on physical exercise or rest. Sometimes the body needs a helping hand, or two.
Chiropractic can be that helping hand that bridges the big gap between rest, dealing with pain, repeatedly taking pain medication and undergoing surgery. A gap that many people with mechanical problems are often pushed over, unnecessarily in many cases, without having explored other much safer, options and solutions.
You don’t have to live with pain and discomfort regardless of its cause. There is a wide world of options out there. Chiropractic is just one of them.
HOW ARE CHIROPRACTORS TRAINED AND REGULATED?
The Chiropractic profession is a regulated clinical practice and all Doctors Of Chiropractic practicing in the UK must by law be registered with GCC (General Chiropractic Council) just as all Medical Doctors must be registered with the GMC (General Medical Council).
In order to become a registered Doctor Of Chiropractic, Chiropractors must undergo detailed study of the clinical sciences including anatomy, physiology, diagnostics, radiology, pharmacology, and much more in a similar way to which a Medical Doctor would be required to. Doctors Of Chiropractic however undergo further training in the field of manual medicine in which they are required to master the specialised skill of manipulative therapy, soft tissue techniques and a specialised system of diagnostics utilising palpation, a highly-developed sense of touch.
Chiropractic Training Requires 5 years of study including one year of supervised practice in which Chiropractors treat patients under high levels of guidance and supervision.
