What is Ear Acupuncture?
Ear Acupuncture is part of the ancient Chinese acupuncture system, dating back over 2,000 years. Originally used by lay people known as bare foot doctors, to bring health services to the rural communities. Acupuncture lost favour during the opium wars, when China adopted the western medical model. (It was thought at the time that as British weapons were more effective then their medicines would also be more powerful.) During the Cultural Revolution, Chairman Mao was forced to send emissaries into the rural areas to re-learn the lost skills of this ancient art of healing. Fortunately, acupuncture had remained popular in the rural areas. Since the 1950’s further research has been carried out by the French Dr Paul Nogier and others expanding the Chinese ear map to over 200 points, which are accepted worldwide. Due to its detoxification effects ear acupuncture is widely used in drug and alcohol agencies throughout America, Britain and Europe. My own experience is it is far wider than that.
How it does it work?
Although there is much dispute about how ear acupuncture works. It has gained increasing popularity during this century though out the whole world. As a result, there has been increasing research that confirms its effectiveness. It is thought, ear acupuncture works on the principle that ears are a micro system of the whole body.
Like most complementary medicines, acupuncture works on the energy system, known as meridians, where it is generally believed that blockages/stagnation in the energy create ill health. Ear acupuncture detoxifies the body, clears blockages and diverts energy to where it is most needed. It is known that ear acupuncture stimulates the body to release a number of chemicals such as pain relieving endorphins, and brains chemical messengers, which act upon different tissues and parts of the body and affect its response to stress and discomfort. It also releases the feel good factors serotonin.
