Who Am I? What Do I Do?
Rolfing
I graduated from the European Rolfing Association training programme in Munich. I previously practiced as a Solicitor in Wiltshire before my wife and I decided to move to Wales in 2008 seeking a more relaxed lifestyle and to pursue our dream to change careers.
Our goal was to reduce stress and to learn more about the fascinating field of complementary therapies. My interest in manual therapy was sparked by my experiences in long distance cycling events for charity, and later in golf, fitness training, running and country walking. My particular interest is in the realm of the individual’s potential for optimal strength, efficiency of movement and body awareness in physical activity.
A deep interest in Rolfing was inspired in me by the benefits of a series of Rolfing sessions. I can breathe more easily while cycling, increasing my speed and power output, and reducing fatigue. I no longer have recurring strains in my knees, lower back and shoulders. Relief from neck and shoulder pain caused by a whiplash injury many years ago means I am now able to play golf again with more ease and strength. In general, I feel better able to adapt to life’s physical, mental and emotional challenges.
A two week long intensive introductory course held in Germany on the Rolfing method of hands-on tissue manipulation techniques provided the inspiration for me to study further and train to be a Certified Rolfing practitioner. The training programme was intensive and provided plenty of opportunity to learn techniques of manual manipulation of muscles and connective tissues in order to relieve a variety of common strain related conditions. The body is more at ease and functions most efficiently when its structure is balanced in gravity. The field of gravity can accentuate any imbalances in the body and diminish its flexibilty.
Tension patterns can cause painful symptons to arise in joints, muscles or nerves. This is often the result of strain caused by compensatory patterns that can arise from accidents, illnesses, trauma, repetitive motion, aging or strain arising from everyday activities, sports training programmes etc. Reducing gravity’s adverse effect is the goal of Rolfing. The release of tension patterns optimises the individual’s capacity to breathe and to move free of unnecessary restrictions. To restore alignment of the body in gravity, improving posture and freedom of movement, requires an initial series of ten sessions.
Each session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes and is usually spaced 1-2 weeks apart, or up to 3-4 weeks dependng on the individual. The goal of each session is to address the relationship of all of the muscle groups of the body and their relationship with each other through the connective tissue web that holds and transmits strain patterns. Each session builds on the the results of the previous one. To ensure the structural changes are maintained, movement training is an important element of the series of sessions.
Reiki
In 2005 I trained at the Still Point School of Reiki in Gloucestershire to Levels 1 and 2, and in 2007 I trained as a Reiki Master with Jay Macleod at Bath Reiki. The benefits of Reiki treatments, and in particular using energy flow as part of meditation can be profoundly life enhancing at the physical, emotional and spiritual levels.
I provide treatments, and I can offer training in Original Japanese Reiki on a one-to-one basis. Practice Locations I have a practice in Carmel, near Crosshands, and I am also available in Cardiff and Carmarthen.
