Who Am I? What Do I Do?
Joanna is originally from Poland. Through a very sporting past and travelling she developed a love of all things to do with health, fitness and leading a healthy lifestyle.
Besides yoga, she is a coach and complementary therapist. She combines her skills as a yoga instructor with sports coaching (half-marathons), massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and healing.
Yoga
I started practising yoga as an athlete to strengthen deep core muscles, gain more flexibility and balance. I thought of yoga as just another form of exercise, but I was wrong there. The more consistent I became with my practice the more I started to notice other great benefits of yoga such as improved concentration, relaxation, wellbeing, self-development and spiritual growth.
I became more mindful of what I am doing and found a natural rhythm to my breath. Yoga brought a deeper focus, energy and peace.
What Happens During a Class?
There are still a lot of misconceptions about Yoga, for instance, Yoga being a religion or an exercise. Yoga is more than that. In fact, Yoga is being practiced by a lot of people from different religions and it is a way for us to keep fit. But if you think that Yoga is just that then you are greatly mistaken. Yoga is a process of self-transformation.. It is a complete science that includes breath work, physical postures, visualisation, chanting, relaxation and meditation. The mind is engaged to develop awareness of and transform one’s physical and mental state.
I teach physical poses (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama), and meditation to achieve physical and mental balance as well as spirituality.
I usually start a yoga session by introducing a simple theme based on the philosophy of yoga and Om chanting or mantra chanting. We then do some gentle stretching to warm up. After that I demonstrate each posture and talk students through it. I finish with pranayama and relaxation session. With more experienced students I often incorporate some meditation techniques usually from buddhist tradition.
Complementary Therapies
Aromatherapy
The art of aromatherapy was used by the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. It has been known for over a thousand years how powerful essential oils are. In modern times, essential oils are present in many natural products including massage oils, skin care products, bathing oils, perfumes, soaps and even toothpaste. Introducing essential oils into our lifestyle can be quite easy, fun, and therapeutically beneficial.
Aromatherapy is often described as a mind and body healer. Essential oils can be antiviral, antiseptic, sedating, uplifting, detoxifying, digestive, stimulating, bactericidal, anti-inflammatory, or vulnerary.
This makes aromatherapy helpful for numerous ailments, such as:
New information coming soon in accordance with new ASA (Advertising Standards Agency) guidelines.
What Happens During A Treatment?
Your first visit will consist of a full history being taken about your general health and lifestyle. This information will be the basis on which the best blend of essential oils will be made up for you.
The treatment consists of a relaxing massage using a blend of oils. The massage concentrates on the muscle areas of the body and aims amongst other things to improve circulation. The effect will be relaxing, stimulating or balancing depending on the oils used.
Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient holistic therapy that focuses on working to stimulate reflex points of the feet. It was first practiced by the Egyptians and Chinese.
What Happens During A Treatment?
The treatment works points on the feet and hands, known as reflex points, and each relates to a specific area or system of the body. The feet and hands are in effect maps of the body. By applying directed pressure, tension and blockages can be broken down and free flow of energy to the whole body is promoted. The part of the body connected to the reflex point is also cleared, allowing the body to heal itself. The therapeutic effect of reflexology leaves you feeling relaxed, calm, and revitalised. It will give you a general feeling of wellbeing and rid the body of toxins and impurities.
Reiki
Reiki is a natural healing technique that works to bring harmony and balance in a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual way. Reiki comes from two Japanese words:
Rei meaning Universal, and
Ki meaning Life Force Energy
Negative and disharmonious thoughts and feelings can cause a disruption in the flow of the energy. The Reiki practitioner channels the energy through the hands to the recipient, activating the body’s own natural ability to heal itself.
It releases blocked energy, cleanses the body of toxins and helps to create a state of balance.
Reiki can help to:
· Reduce stress
· Promote deep emotional healing
· Balance the energy system
· Accelerate physical healing
· Bring deep and restful sleep
What Happens During A Treatment?
The Reiki treatment is often experienced as gentle, relaxing and meditative. The recipient lies on a treatment bed may remain fully clothed. The Reiki practitioner lightly places her hands in various positions over the body with each position being held for several minutes. Throughout the session, no pressure is exerted by the practitioner.
