Who Am I? What Do I Do?
Ever since qualifying in 2005 with a MTI Diploma in Holistic Massage, Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology I have been a registered practitioner with the Massage Training Institute (MTI). I trained with the Association of Reflexology (AOR) to gain my diploma in reflexology in 2006 and with the International Federation of Aromatherapy (IFPA) to achieve my diploma in aromatherapy. I graduated in 2008 with a Bsc (hons) Complementary Therapy, providing me with additional advanced massage skills, in-depth anatomy and physiology, practical research skills and basic nutrition.
I am currently working part-time as a mobile therapist / from my home and have delivered massage on-site to the workplace. Clients range from stressed out office workers, those suffering with an illness/chronic health problems, mothers, fathers, those in need of hormonal balancing, marathon runners… basically just about anyone can benefit from regular treatments! Regular massage strengthens and tones the entire body system. It can stimulate or alternatively calm the nervous system, help to ease tension, stiffness and pain leaving you with an enhanced sense of well being. I find that often after a massage session clients shoulders often drop, becoming looser and lighter having arrived tense and hunched, voices seem lower, more relaxed and faces look brighter and happier. Reflexology is deeply relaxing and many clients feel they sleep better after a treatment.
I also volunteer with vulnerable adults with profound learning disabilities delivering reflexology treatments and hand / foot massage. I find it highly rewarding, for example some clients are very agitated but can become calm, relaxed, smiley and giggly during reflexology, other benefits to this particular client group may be increased self awareness and self esteem.
I work by looking at a person’s health with the aim of achieving balance; considering diet, lifestyle, emotional wellbeing, posture, stress and the body’s physical state. Often conventional medicine simply treats the symptoms of disease. I aim to look at you as a person, looking for the root cause of an illness, tailoring individual treatments to your needs. I don’t work by simply giving “routine” aromatherapy massage or reflexology treatments but I try to incorporate all of the following elements to a session:
- In-depth consultation to assess what treatment will work for you and to devise a tailor made treatment plan
- Customised massage sessions using for example deep tissue, stretching, compression or a lighter more nurturing touch where necessary
- Focusing on specific areas of the body where needed
- Integrating all my therapies to boost healing (e.g integrating reflexology into a massage treatment)
- Giving aftercare advice and personalised aromatherapy products to take home.
It has taken me a long time to find a career that I believe in and have fun and enjoy along the way too! When I first started my massage training the first thing that got me hooked was having massages myself! Having a massage can be one of the nicest things, especially when the body is tense and stiff. I love aromatherapy too, and integrating it into a massage only makes it that much better!!
For me working from the A.C.T clinic encompasses all the reasons why I have chosen to work in this field. I see having regular aromatherapy, massage or reflexology treatments more than simply a ‘pamper’ or ‘beauty’ treatment but a real step towards maintaining balance and health within our lives.
