Who am I? What do I do?
I am a UKCP registered Family and Systemic Psychotherapist and a registered social worker with more than 30 years experience of working in educational, health and social care settings, initially as a social worker and then as a psychotherapist. I have also worked as a manager and as a social care inspector and have qualifications and experience in training. I have developed courses and organisational policy. As well as working therapeutically with individuals, couples, families and groups I particularly enjoy working with therapists and other professionals in a consultative/supervisory capacity.
I abide by the code of ethics of the United Kingdom Council of Psychotherapy and the Care Council for Wales.
Family and Systemic Psychotherapy
My approach is a holistic one which takes account of the environment in which people live as well as their important relationships. I provide a safe place where people can think about difficulties in their lives and I work with them towards making the changes that are right for them. Often changes can be made quickly and the therapy is brief. Sometimes solutions take longer to find especially where patterns of thinking, communicating and behaving have become more established over time. Family therapy has been shown to be helpful for children, young people and adults with a wide variety of difficulties such as:
• Family communication problems
• Behaviour difficulties in children and teenagers
• Mental health problems
• Couple relationship difficulties
• Illness and disability in the family
• Separation, divorce and step-family life
• Anorexia, bulimia and other eating disorders
• Adoption
• Fostering, kinship care and the needs of “looked after” children
• Domestic violence
• Self-harm
• Drug and alcohol misuse
• The effects of trauma
• Difficulties relating to ageing
As the number of sessions which will be useful will vary this will be discussed carefully with you as will the interval between appointments. Sessions will usually last for one hour.

Divorce Support Group
Divorce Support Group is a unique service to give help to those whose lives have been affected by the major life event of separation and divorce. Support groups contain up to 8 people and provide a safe environment to discuss the emotional and psychological impact of separation and divorce. Meetings are once a week for 1.5 hours and take place over 10 weeks. At least one individual consultation with the group facilitator (a trained psychotherapist or counsellor) will form part of the process.
Those who have experienced this support have reported feeling more in control of events and of their lives with an increasing sense of independence. They have valued being able to share personal experiences including feelings of distress, anxiety and loss. An important benefit has been the lack of isolation which being a member of a support group brings.
The groups are nationwide and Tessa Jones works as the facilitator in Cardiff.
